Who is this post for?
The Beginners:
If you are nervous about starting the gym in January, this is for you.
The “Pro” Athletes:
If you haven’t missed a workout in five years, read this and send it to a friend who is struggling to start!
Why Being Mediocre is the Secret to Starting
We all know the story. It is January 1st. You promise to workout for two hours every day. You eat only salad. By January 10th? You are tired, sore, and back on the sofa.
This year, let’s try something different. Instead of trying to be a “Fitness Superstar” on day one, I want you to try Chaos Week. The goal isn’t to be perfect. The goal is to be consistently mediocre.
What is Chaos Week?
Most people quit because they think: “If I can’t do a full hour at the gym, there is no point in going.” That is a lie! During Chaos Week, we celebrate the tiny, “bad” workouts. The Rule: Doing 1% is always better than doing 0%.
Your 7-Day “Chaos Week” Schedule
Day 1: The “Just Show Up” Day – Drive, cycle or walk to the gym. Walk inside. Fill up your water bottle. Then? Leave. You are teaching your brain that the gym is a friendly place.
Day 2: The “One Song” Workout – Put on your favorite song. Exercise (run, jump, or dance) until the song ends. When the music stops, you are done.
Day 3: The “TV Commercial” Challenge – Watch your favorite show. Every time there is an advertisement, stand up and sit down 10 times.
Day 4: The Outfit Rehearsal – Put on your gym clothes as soon as you get home. You don’t have to exercise; just wear them while you make dinner. Getting dressed is 50% of the struggle!
Day 5: The “Lazy” Walk – Walk to the end of your street and back. That’s it.
Day 6: The Social Media Tour – Go to the gym, sit on one machine, and check your phone for 5 minutes. Do one set of 10 repetitions. Go home.
Day 7: The “Oops, I Did It” Day – By now, you might actually feel like doing a “real” 10-minute workout. If you do—great! If you don’t? You still won the week.
Why this works
Big goals are scary. Tiny goals are easy. When you make the goal very small, it is impossible to fail. Once you stop being afraid of the gym, you will start to love it.
A Message for our Seasoned Athletes
If you are already a “Gym Rat” or a fitness enthusiast, you know that the hardest part is simply walking through the door.
Do you have a friend or family member who wants to get healthy but is too scared to start? Don’t send them a “Hardcore Leg Day” video. Send them this article instead! Help them understand that it’s okay to start small. Be their “Chaos Week” partner and celebrate their 3-minute workouts with them.
